Tom Adala, a senior official in the National Intelligence Service (NIS), is reported to have been battling depression and even sought treatment before taking his own life at home in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.
Adala was allegedly battling with the condition after he separated with his wife who left with their children amid an ongoing divorce case.
According to his colleagues, his condition worsened after he was recently appointed to lead the Counter-Extremism Violence Unit at the NIS headquarters.
However to him, the transfer felt like a demotion from his prestigious position prompting him to want to resign.
” We kept visiting him at home after the ‘demotion’ and his situation was not good at all. He was also going through a divorce and his enstranged wife had left with their children,” his friends said.
On Tuesday morning, the NIS officer was discovered by his nephew dead inside the servant’s quarters of his home on Kirichwa Road.
According to his nephew, Adala went to bed on Monday night but did not show up for breakfast the next morning.
This prompted a search which resulted to him being found in the servant’s quarters with a bullet shot in the head.
Before calling the police to report the event, the nephew told other family members who then called the police.
They found a suicide note he left behind which stated that no one should be blamed for his demise.
Right now, the body remains at Lee Funeral Home.
