Burna Boy

Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna boy alias the African Giant becomes the first artist in Africa to have two sold out concerts at the London Stadium.

The London had a capacity of 80,000 people who came for his concert on Saturday June 29. In the previous year the stadium had about 60,000 fans who graced his Concert.

In 2023 a sold-out crowd of 60,000 fans screamed the Grammy award-winner’s Afrobeats lyrics back to him at the London Stadium.

And he didn’t disappoint with his two-hour set – bringing out famous friends like Stormzy and Dave on a giant merry-go-round to perform alongside him.

Afrobeats – a mix of African and Western influences – has seen a massive rise in popularity over recent years thanks to the likes of Burna Boy and Wizkid.

The pair, two of Nigeria’s biggest stars, have headlined some of the world’s major music festivals but it was Burna Boy who took it to another level .

Selling out a UK stadium has been hailed as a massive moment for the genre, which has been appearing on charts across the world and taking over TikTok dance challenges.

It’s also been embraced by some of the world’s biggest stars – with Beyoncé and Drake featuring Afrobeats artists on their albums.

Another aspect that distinguishes Burna Boy from arena-performing peers Wizkid and Davido is that he performs with full live accompaniment on stage.

In April 2022, Burna Boy also became the first Nigerian artist in history to headline Madison Square Garden. Love, Damini, which was released a few months after his MSG performance, set a new record of becoming the highest debut of an African album on the Billboard 200 chart and gave the artist a GRAMMY nomination for Best Global Music Album.

Ever since the release of debut album Life, the Nigerian Afrobeat singer has grown from a promising talent who performed at clubs to becoming the first African artist to sell out stadium shows in Europe and North America.
