Content Creator Carrie Wahu has called out the Kenyan Government to build reliable sewer systems as well as fix the broken ones in a bid to prevent a repetition of the National catastrophe the country has been experiencing amid the heavy rains.
Wahu on her Instagram stories lauding the government for their tree planting initiative said their is a dire need for proper sewer systems so as to prevent floods even as the heavy rains continue to be experienced.
”Despite the population expanding, we are still using drainage and sewer lines constructed in the 90s.
Planting trees is great but we also need proper sewer systems. It is important we face reality instead of just doing things that make us feel better.” Wahu wrote.

This is after the government declared Friday 10th May 2024, a public holiday to mourn those who lost their lives during the floods.
Additionally, the government urged its citizens to plant trees to mark the National Tree Growing Day.
President Ruto addressing the nation at the statehouse, said that the day had been set aside to mark the tree planting programme to ease climate change.
He also said that the same day would be used to remember those affected by the floods.
” We have set aside this day as a part of the commemorative efforts of those we have lost in the floods and it will be marked with a major tree planting exercise aimed at mitigating climate change,” said President Ruto.
President Ruto urged his citizens to unite and plant trees alongside the government. He said we should plant at least 200 million trees on Friday.
”If it will be possible, we should plant at least 200 million trees on Friday and work towards improving our environment.” the President said.
However many citizens especially in flood-prone areas have poorly maintained drainage systems that often get blocked which causes water to accumulate.
A flood survivor in Mathare while talking to an international media station, Al-Jazeera stated that it was the state’s National Railway Corporation that caused the floods.
“This was caused by the state National Railways Corporation. They are the ones who built the culvert downstream and the tunnel upstream. It should be their responsibility to maintain the system,” he said.
