Veteran female boxer Conjestina Achieng has landed a new job after being discharged from rehabilitation.
On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko announced that he had employed Conjestina as a gym instructor and head of security at his resort.
He further said that the former boxer will not live Siaya but she will just be visiting her rural home under supervision.
“Conje will be the gym instructor and head security at Salama Bling Beach resort, Kanamai. Together with her sister, coach and son, we inspected the hotel that she’ll be working at and they all agreed. She will now be making a living in order to support her family, lakini tumeelewana nawao kwamba Siaya hatarudi tena atakuwa anaenda kusalimia under supervision na kurudi,” the politician stated.
Sonko had previously intended to employ the boxing champion at Club Volume but he changed his mind. According to him, he wouldn’t want the Conjestina who has been in rehab recovering from mental health issues, in an environment that can have her easily get her to using drugs.
“My initial plan for Conje after healing was to employ her as the Head of security operations at the international Club Volume but changed my mind after thinking through what she has gone through before on drug and substance abuse. I don’t want her around any environment associated with drugs,” Mike Sonko said.
He added that Conjestina’s recovery journey should serve as a reminder that everyone should be given a second chance.
“As Conje embarks on this new chapter of her life, she carries with her the hopes and dreams of young upcoming boxers. Her story serves as a reminder that everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves, regardless of their past or present circumstances,” he said.
Over the weekend, Sonko organised a friendly boxing match between Conjestina Achieng’ and Fatuma Zarika . The aim of the boxing challenge that occurred at Mombasa women hospital, Miritini was to initiate Conjestina back to her passion and talent after undergoing treatment.
In September 2022, the boxing champion was admitted to Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini. She had previously been admitted to various facilities but her health failed to improve.
