Taita Taveta is the latest County to officially, ban the sale and consumption of Muguka.

Governor Andrew Mwadime said that the move is  aimed at controlling the negative effects of the stimulant in the county.

The Governor highlighted several effects of Muguka consumption on the youth pointing out that it leads to overdependent.

“A huge number of youths consuming Muguka in the county have turned to be unproductive and overdependent at an alarming rate,” Mwadime mentioned.

He emphasized larger outcomes of the use and uncontrolled consumption leads to social-economic and environmental consequences.

“Addiction to Muguka is now a threat which has contributed to tragedy and suffering of many families as a result of prolonged or traumatic parental absence.”

In his sentiments, the Governor believes that the effects of Muguka extends to family relations.

He added that he will not allow the future of his county to perish because of this stimulant.

“I cannot sit and watch an entire generation becoming vulnerable and being wiped out because of Muguka,” the Taita Taveta leader said.

This announcement comes after similar directives were made by Governors of Mombasa and Kilifi.

Mombasa Governor Sherrif Nassir mentioned that the consumption of the stimuli is high among school-going children along the coast.

Kilifi ban came right after Mombasa. Governor Gideon Mung’aro, in a statement released on May 24 in line with law, issued directives banning the entry, transportation, distribution, sale, and use of muguka within Kilifi County.

The county boss highlighted a number of directives that prohibits entry of Muguka in his county.

The move is part of the coastal region effort to curb the widespread consumption of Miraa.

However, these bans have been criticized from every corner. Leaders in Embu, the dominant supplier of Miraa, argue that the bans could damaging to Miraa farmers.

This comes even as petitioners move to court to challenge the ban by the Coastal counties.
