Over 90 heads of livestock have been stolen in Kipkeren area in Marakwet East Sub County, with tension remaining high in the area.
The stolen livestock, belonging to 7 households were grazing at Red Cross farm when the incident occurred.
Local Residents said that the culprits, whose number was not immediately established, were armed with AK 47 rifles.
“The livestock were grazing at the Red Cross farm when bandits came. There is nothing we could do because they were armed with AK -47 rifles”, said Joel Sirma, a resident.
Security personnel drawn from the AP, GSU, and the Anti-Stock theft Unit have launch a pursuit for the raiders, who headed to Koloa in Tiaty sub county.
The residents condemned the incident, demanding that a thorough disarmament, since many weapons are in the wrong hands in the area.
“We condemn this this attack in the strongest term possible. We wonder why such attacks continue yet we have a lot of security installations in this area. There are a lot of illegal firearms in this area and we want to ask the government to carry out a thorough disarmament in this area,” added Jacob Sogomo.
This comes a few days after a middle aged man was killed and over 50 heads of livestock stolen in a cattle rustling incident in Kimarich area.
Residents have been urged to remain patient and calm as questions emerge on why attacks persist despite the joint security operation, bringing together police and KDF, in the volatile parts of the North Rift region.
