Nonini

Genge musician Nonini says that he doesn’t have a relationship with his father.

This is because his father disappeared from his life even before he was born. He however knows him and met him severally while growing up.

“My father is there but I don’t desire him. By the time I I was born, he was already missing. I have met him on several occasions for lunch. We don’t have a relationship,” he said during an episode on Iko Nini podcast.

Nonini added that he approached his mother not long ago to find out why his father deserted them.

“Something weird happened nikizaliwa. So apparently, when I was born in 1982 my mum and dad were driving in Ngara. My father was arrested, he doesn’t know why and my mum was forced to drive home on her own. My mum was then 8 months pregnant with me and dad was jailed for a year. I was born when he was in prison.

“When he was released, he never came to look for us. He left and married another woman. That is the story my mum told me recently because I tried to understand what exactly happened,” Nonini said.

His dad, Nakitare, a Luhya from Western, is a former member of parliament.

Nonini further said that when he was starting music, there are those who discouraged him, because he was not from the streets and his family was wealthy and influential.

“People were associating me with his life but me and his life were totally two different things. I was not raised on that side, I was raised on my mum’s side. People claim that I have not hustled and only had a soft life, it’s not the case. For my elder sisters and brothers, they have a relationship, he was there for them, but for me, the ten-year gap meant I knew him differently,” he shared.
