Genge musician Nonini recently returned to the country for the first time, since relocating to US three years ago
While speaking to Lulu Hassan, Nonini said that he lives in Maryland US, where he still performs in clubs and also runs a cloth line dubbed Mgenge true.
“Nonini yuko lakini niligeuza mazingira nikaingia US. Mimi huishi Maryland but hii ni mara yangu ya kwanza kurudi Kenya after 3 years,” he admitted.
Lulu wanted to know why he chose to leave when he was a well established musician in Kenya.
Nonini said that he left because of his son and the effects of Covid 19 were the major reasons for his permanent relocation.
“I relocated one because my son lives there so like a dad, I wanted to be close to him. Right now he is 11 years old so my presence was important for him. But what made me relocate completely is the Covid 19 lockdown.
“Even us creatives were highly affected, we weren’t given any stimulus, we were not making money and you know at nightlife is what makes us money through performing. It was a very hard time. I thought about it nikapanda tu ndege,” he said.
At the same time, he said that he came back to the country because he is working on two music project, with one being for Valentines season.
“In have a surprise. 14th Februarykuna kitu kipya naangusha. Nishafanya, hio ndio project ilinileta hapa Kenya. Nikienda nitarelease. I have two projects loading, moja inatoka 13th February so that watu waiamkie na mapenzi,” he said.
