Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has revealed that he will prioritise residents living in Kanjo houses when it comes to the affordable housing project.
In an interview with a local radio on Monday morning, the governor said that they will not be required to pay for their new houses under the affordable housing project.
Sakaja said that they will only be required to pay for the service charges like before.
“There are 7 estates we have already awarded including Woodley, Bahati, Shauri Moyo, Jericho all the people who have been living in our kanjo houses ,who have been paying since the 50s and 60s all these people we will give them houses for free,” Sakaja said.
For instance Woodley estates has 46 houses but with the affordable housing project at least 1,975 houses will be built. The City county boss argues that he didn’t see any point in selling the 46 houses to the old tenants .
The affordable housing units will be made of studios( bedsitters), two – and three- bedroom apartments, while markets – driven development will have two – and three – bedroom houses .
The affordable houses will cost ksh 840,00 and 5.76 million. A one – room will cost ksh 840,000, with monthly instalments of 3,200 while a 3 – bedroom house will cost Ksh 5.76 million with a monthly payment of Ksh 41,800.
The housing options are divided into social , affordable and market units ,accommodating various income groups.
The government has already rolled out the affordable housing programmes, that would see the construction of 200 houses per constituency, as promised by president William Ruto.
The project however faced criticism from both the opposition and the general public, with both parties blaming the government for lack of clarity on how the affordable housing agenda will be effective .
Several petitions were filed in court andthe court’s ruling caused tension between the judiciary and executive arms of the government . President Ruto accused some of the judges of being corrupt, claiming that they were collaborating with the opposition to undermine national development projects .
