Mwalimu Rachel, former manager of sailors gang, recently unveiled the challenges that the former Gengetone sensations, t encountered during their rise to fame, particularly in the compensation realm.
During an interview on the Mic Cheque podcast, Mwalimu Rachel shared insights into the compensation methods Sailors Gang experienced. She highlighted that their collaboration with KRG The Don on the hit song “Nyandus” involved unconventional compensation.
“They went and did the same with KRG, Walilipwa na nyama na tei,” she revealed referring to payment in the form of food and drinks.
The radio presenter continued to unravel complications within the group, pointing out their collaboration with Octopizzo in the song “Wakeritho.” Surprisingly, she admitted being in the dark about it, discovering it just like everyone else.
“I came across the song they did with Octo just like everyone else; the boys went, recorded a song, shot a video, but there were no split sheets, no agreements,” she disclosed, emphasizing the lack of formal arrangements.
The challenges escalated when Sailors Gang, consisting of members Peter Miracle Baby, Shalkido, Qoqos Juma, Masilver, and Lexxy Yung, breached their contract by signing with a different record label without Mwalimu Rachel’s knowledge. This decision had repercussions, causing complications in the distribution of their music and straining their professional relationship.
Sailors Gang rose to prominence in 2018 with their infectious hit “Wamlambez,” becoming pivotal figures in the Gengetone genre. However, last year, Mwalimu Rachel expressed regret for managing the group, recounting challenges that even led to a night in jail. Despite allegations that she played a role in blocking the group’s YouTube channel, she denied them, revealing she received death threats along with her son.
In response to Mwalimu Rachel’s revelations, Shalkido, one of the Sailors Gang members, urged her to move on from their chapter. He emphasized that the group had already moved on, with only Peter Miracle Baby actively engaged in music. In an Instagram story, Shalkido addressed Mwalimu Rachel, saying, “It’s about time you move on from Sailors Gang. We as a team moved on long time ago and focused on other things that matter more in our lives.”
The separation of the group marked a shift in their individual pursuits, with Sailors Gang leaving an indelible mark on the Gengetone genre, despite the hurdles and changes in their journey.
