In a groundbreaking move, Kenya has officially imposed a nationwide ban on the importation, manufacturing, sale, and use of Shisha, as declared by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.
This decisive action, announced on Wednesday, also extends to the advertisement, promotion, and distribution of Shisha, effective immediately. Any establishment found flouting these regulations is set to face swift closure, reinforcing the government’s commitment to curbing the Shisha trade.
Interior CS Kindiki sternly stated, “The importation, manufacture, sale, use, advertisement, promotion, or distribution of Shisha is outlawed in the country; any establishment found in breach of this provision will be shut down with immediate effect.”
This proclamation comes on the heels of intensified efforts by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), which has been conducting raids and arrests nationwide in a bid to clamp down on Shisha-related activities.
In a bid to reinforce these measures, Kindiki has directed County Security Teams to ensure strict adherence to the directives, leaving no room for non-compliance. The government’s proactive stance seeks to address public health concerns associated with Shisha consumption, as well as align with the Tobacco Control Act 2007 and the Tobacco Control Regulations 2014.
Notably, the recent crackdown by NACADA has yielded significant results, with the apprehension of individuals involved in the sale and distribution of Shisha products. In a high-profile operation at a popular restaurant in Nairobi’s Kilimani area, four individuals, including the manager, sellers, and a storekeeper, were detained. This operation resulted in the seizure of 78 Shisha bongs and over 200 assorted flavors, underlining the widespread nature of the Shisha trade that the government aims to quash.
As the ban takes effect, questions arise about its impact on businesses, public health, and the broader enforcement strategy. Stakeholders across various sectors are closely monitoring developments, anticipating both challenges and positive outcomes from this bold move by the Kenyan government.
