Kenyatta University students and staff involved in a road accident in Maungu, Voi on Monday have been airlifted to other medical facilities for specialized treatment.
The school bus was reported to have been carrying 55 students, 1 lab technician and 2 drivers when it collided with a trailer along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway while on their way for an academic trip in Mombasa.
According to reports a total of 11 people have lost their lives as a result of the accident, with ten dying on the spot while one succumbed to injuries.
Additionally, 42 sustained critical injuries as 4 escape with minor injuries.
On Tuesday, the University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina visited the Moi County Referral Hospital to check on the status of the students and staff involved in the accident.
Air Ambulance services were waiting at Ikanga airstrip in Voi, to ferry the patients in critical conditions to other facilities.
A number of casualties were moved to Aga Khan University Hospital in Mombasa. Seven students have been airlifted to Avenue Hospital while nine others will be moved to the same facility later.
Some other students will also he moved to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Research Hospital in Nairobi.
The university also revealed that the bodies of fatalities will be moved to the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Research Hospital in Nairobi.
The university dispatched a team from the main and Mombasa campus to the accident scene on Monday night to assist survivors and assess the situation.
The team which comprised of two doctors, medical personnel, security officers as well as staff wellness officers.
Wainaina while condoling with the bereaved families noted that the university had set up a help desk at the Business Students Services Centre (BSSC) Room 151 and also released a helpline number 0202310709 or 0723352 483 to respond to queries and offer support and assistance during this challenging time.
