A peaceful protest in Nairobi took an unexpected turn when a young woman, dubbed as a “Gen Z baddie,” found herself forced to defend local businesses from goons with a baton in hand.

The protests, initially organized to address the controversial finance bill 2024 #RejectFinanceBill2024 and now government accountability #RutoMustGo, drew thousands of young people to the streets.

Among them was the Gen z buddie who left her home that morning with the intention of joining her peers in a peaceful demonstration only to find out that things are not as she expected them to be.

“At first, I came out of my house coming here knowing I was coming to protest like my fellow youths who are protesting now. Things have turned,” she said when asked why she was armed with a baton.

As the protest unfolded, it became apparent that not all who gathered had the same intentions. Groups of goons began looting, stealing phones, and causing havoc.

Local businesses, already struggling in the current economic climate, became targets of the chaos shops and supermarkets being the key victims of these goons.

The Gen Z buddie together with other patriotics armed only with a baton, took a stand to protect their community.

“The goons have been sent everywhere, stealing from people, snatching people’s phones. We are here to deal with them first, then we continue with the protest,” she explained.

Her courageous actions quickly garnered attention on social media, where videos of her defending businesses circulated widely. Many praised her bravery and dedication to the cause, dubbing her the “Gen Z baddie” of Nairobi.

Further complicating matters, she revealed troubling information about the origins of the disruption.

“There are goons who have been sent and we’ve just seen a video circulating. Men coming from city hall, from the governor’s office,” she alleged. These men’s work was to cause chaos to undermine the protest.

While the Gen Zs continue to demand change, they now also face the added burden of defending their communities from those seeking to exploit the unrest.
