The Ford Foundation responded to President William Ruto’s Monday accusations,  that it is actively sponsoring the country’s ongoing anti-government protests.

Speaking at a public rally, President Ruto linked the organization to the violence and disorder in the country, stating that he is aware of the Ford Foundation’s efforts to destabilise a peaceful society.

“Those who are sponsoring the violence, we know them, and I want to call out those who are behind the anarchy in Kenya. Shame on them! I want to ask the people from the Ford Foundation to explain to us what they seek to gain by destabilizing Kenya’s democracy,” he said.

In a statement, the Ford Foundation addressed the allegations and distanced itself from the demonstrations.

The foundation also made it clear that it did not support or sponsor the most recent demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024. After the protests started on June 18, there were fatalities, severe injuries, and the law was withdrawn.

“While we acknowledge the right of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for a just and equitable country, we repudiate any actions or speech that are hateful or advocate violence against any institution, individual or community.” the statement read.

“We do not fund or sponsor the recent protests against the finance bill and have a strictly non-partisan policy of all our grantmaking,” the foundation added.

The foundation notes that it will continue to assist Kenya in its development and leadership on an African and global stage, as evidenced by its support for the first African Climate Summit in Nairobi last year, and that it is dedicated to building its legacy of more than 60 years in the region so that Kenyans can unlock opportunities that benefit all.
