Out of the Sh3 million that Kenyans contributed, the families of Rex Masai, 29 and Evans Kiratu, 21, who died during last week’s anti-Finance Bill protests received Sh1 million each.
Following their deaths in the initial anti-finance bill protests, Kenyans organised an MChanga Kitty, fundraising to support the families.
On June 20, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Rex Masai was shot and died in the Nairobi CBD. Evans passed away the next day as a result of injuries from tear gas being shot in his groin. He passed away at Kenyatta National Hospital during his medical care.
The money was sent to the two families on Thursday, specifically to their moms, according to Honey Farsafi, better known as Hanifa.
Ian, another Kenyan who was wounded at least three times on his back and may never walk again, will also receive a comparable sum in addition to the money from the Kitty to cover his medical fees, according to Hanifa, one of the controllers of the MChanga account.
“The remaining will be sent to the family of Ian, who was shot three times in the back and won’t be able to walk again,” Hanifa said in a statement on X
“This is minus the hospital bills. He will receive it tomorrow since the bank limit can’t allow us today.” she further wrote
