21-year old Evans Kiratu, who died after being hit by teargas canister during the Anti-finance bill protests in Nairobi to be laid to rest today.

Evans was shot on Thursday, June 20th  in a protest where Kenyans were voicing concerns over the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

His mother Ann Wanjiru ,said she was informed by a good Samaritan on June 22nd that her son had been injured. She rushed to hospital only to find that he had died.

On a post on X, Haki Africa CEO Hussein Khalid said, “We have picked the body of Shujaa Evans Kiratu for burial today at his rural home in Kiambu County today in a few hours from now. Shujaa Evans was much loved by his family and friends as emotions are running so high. #GoneTooSoon.”

 

Kenyans have since joined forces to contribute funds for those who were affected during the nationwide protests.

Within hours of its establishment, Mchanga fundraising for the families of those killed and injured during the anti-finance bill demonstrations raised almost Sh14 million.

Through Mchanga, Kenyans have contributed at least Ksh 24 million as of Friday morning, June 28, to support those who had been victims of police brutality during the tragic demonstrations against the finance bill.

Over 32,204 Kenyans had given Ksh 24,000.827 through Mchanga, exceeding the Ksh 10 million goal.

As of Thursday night, human rights organizations stated that over 700 Kenyans had suffered abuse in the hands of anti-riot police, at least 40 people died during the demonstrations, and that a startling number of injuries had resulted from gunfire.
