Comedian Eric Omondi has confirmed that he is free following earlier reports that he had been arrested while leading a parallel Mashujaa Day celebrations at Uhuru Park on Thursday.
Several activists were arrested when they joined other Kenyans who gathered to celebrate those who lost their lives during the nationwide protests in June and July this year.
Police also used teargas to disperse several others who tried to access the park.
In an Instagram post, Eric confirmed that he was at Uhuru park to celebrate the fallen heroes but he wore a female Islamic attire to avoid being detected by the police.
“Am free. I was at Uhuru Park the whole morning but I was disguised because I had been given intel and to be careful. Around 12pm, the police chased us. Nilishikwa juu I couldn’t run in a buibui. The police were shocked to realize it was me. What was important is that we showed up and celebrated our heroes,” he said.
The comedian-turned-activist said it was a Gen Z police officer who informed him of the planned arrest very early in the morning. The police said that they had been ordered to finish him.
“He told me that they had been given orders to deal with me once and for all. His exact words wer, “Huyo kijana ametusumbua sana nyinyi fanyeni vile mtafanya.” I am here at Uhuru Park because I had to show up, they don’t know that am here. We will deal with themthe way they are dealing with us. Mungu ako na sisi,. The policemen are here,” he said.
