Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has declared that Uhuru park is not available for reservations on public holidays.
In a tweet, Sakaja noted that the park can’t be reserved on public holidays to allow other Kenyans to enjoy it. He noted that the park can only be booked for events on other normal days.
“Uhuru Park has been OPEN and remains OPEN to the public EVERY DAY. Every Kenyan is allowed to come and is welcome to enjoy their Park. You can also book for events. A public park is, however, NOT available to be RESERVED for exclusive use during a PUBLIC HOLIDAY. Other Kenyans will also want to enjoy. It can be reserved on any other day. Kujeni tu mmoja mmoja mjae hakuna haja ya kuomba,” he said.
Comedian turned activist Eric Omondi is however planning to host a Mashujaa Day event at the park. He has urged all Kenyans to attend the event that is set to commemorate youthful Kenyans that lost their lives during the nationwide protests in June-July 2024. The chief guests will be parents and relatives of those who were killed in the protests.
“Calling upon all Kenyans from all corners of this nation to join us this Sunday 20th as we celebrate our fallen heroes at Uhuru Park. Every generation has its heroes and these are ours. Carry a flag and a candle. Program strats at 9 am, don’t miss,” Eric said.
