Health CS Susan Nakhumicha has told doctors to be patient as the ministry finds possible solutions to their grievances.
She said her team is in collaboration talks with KMPDU officials to come up with a solution that will address the issue concerning the posting of medical interns.
CS Nakhumicha called upon the union to have a talks with her team saying that the strike cannot resolve their grievances.
“I want to acknowledge and take responsibility that there is a delay, but it has been a problem for long, so we are taking our time because we want to get a proper solution to the matter,” she said.
The CS said apart from funding that is required, the ministry is taking into deliberation other issues such as availability of trainers to supervise the medical interns. She also urged the union to give the ministry more time to deliberate on the said issues.
“It does not make sense for us to post the interns without payment, it involves several ministries including the Treasury, I want to assure the inters that something is being done and we are going to resolve the issue,” said Nakhumicha.
This comes after KMPDU gave the ministry a seven-day ultimatum to address their grievances in which if not responded positively they would engage in a nationwide strike.
The medical teams were pushing for posting of medical interns by the government on Thursday when their Secretary General Atellah Davji was attacked by police.
Earlier the health unions had walked out of negotiations after the ministry of health officials said their demands could not be met ,since there were not enough funds to enable the ministry to post medical interns.
Speaking on Sunday, KNUN SG Seth Panyako blamed the delay in posting of interns on corruption and not lack of funds as said by the ministry.
“It is not that this country does not have money, but money is out to bad use, corruption is the problem but when it comes to posting of medical interns, they are telling us there is no money,” Panyako said.
