Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asked Kenyans to be patient as President William Ruto engages stakeholders amid protests over the Finance Bill 2024.

Gachagua called for respect for leaders and restraint from jeering at MPs or damaging property. He highlighted Ruto’s consultations with church leaders, the business community, and other stakeholders to address Gen-Z demonstrators’ concerns.

“Let us give the President a chance to complete the consultation with all stakeholders including the business community and church leaders, among others. Things will stabilise soon and the country will be on a good trajectory of development,” said Mr Gachagua on Saturday.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made these remarks while speaking to Murang’a County residents at Kaharati Primary School grounds in Maragua Constituency during the Maragua Education Endowment Fund event. He also acknowledged the enthusiastic reception from thousands of attendees in Kenol Town.

Gachagua appealed to Gen-Z protesters to halt their demonstrations and cease intimidating leaders regarding their positions on the Finance Bill 2024. President Ruto has rejected the Bill and issued a memorandum to that effect.

“Let us give leaders an opportunity to serve us. There is no need to intimidate them, destroy their property or jeer them. There will be a right time to make a decision on whether to return them to office or not,” said Mr Gachagua.

“To the Gen-Z protesters, we have listened and heard you. Our young children and teenagers have knowledge, we have experience. We can combine the two for the good of our nation,” he  added.

Continuing his address, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua assured protesters, “You have a valid point. We will consider your suggestions.” He confirmed President Ruto’s ongoing consultation process and pledged his support.

Gachagua also announced the resumption of the Mau Mau roads project with the contractor returning to the site. He urged leaders to avoid divisive politics, a sentiment echoed by other political figures present.

Regarding coffee sector reforms, Gachagua cautioned cooperative officials against unauthorized borrowing, emphasizing the need for farmer approval.
