Popular female singer and song writer Nadia Mukami has revealed that she has never earned any royalties from the Music Copyright Society of Kenya.
Through her Insta stories, the mother of one revealed that she registered with the society in 2017, wondering why she has never received any money like other artists.
“I have never received any MCSK money. Yet I signed the contract in 2017 as a new artist. Why MCSK?” she shared.
Nadia’s lamentations come at a time when it is alleged that MCSK can not account for Kshs56 million royalties that were collected in 2023. Disparities were also witnessed in royalties collected by Kenya Association of Music Producers (KAMP) and the Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK)
This was revealed by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) chairman Joshua Kutuny on Wednesday.
“While KAMP and PRISK declared a collection of Ksh.249 million and they accounted for Ksh.61 million and Ksh.52.7 million, respectively, MCSK on its part declared receipts of Ksh.109 million representing a shortfall of Ksh.26 million,” Kutuny said in a statement.
Additionally, MCSK could not account for Kshs30 million revenues collected through Collective Management Organisations.
The matter has since been forwarded to the Etjics and Anti-corruption Commission and Directorate of Criminal Investigations for investigations.
