Multimedia university students have staged demonstrations after a student was attacked by a hyena along Maasai Lodge Road at around 8pm on Monday.

The students paralysed operations along the Magadi road which links Ongata Rongai to Nairobi after one of their comrades was attacked by the Hyena and critically injured.

In their numbers they barricaded the busy highway and lit Tyres rendering it impassable.

The victim of the attack has been identified as 21-year old Kelvin Mwenda, who is in second year.

One of the residents of Olmeut Village in Ongata Rongai rushed to rescue him but was also badly injured by the wild animal. The two were rushed to Wema Nursing Home Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

The angry students accused the Kenya Wildlife Service of reluctance to curb the high number of hyenas in the area and vowed not to back down until the matter was solved. The students while letting out their rage over the tragic incident stated it was not the first time that someone had been attacked by hyenas that are on the loose.

Kenya University Student Organization President Jesse Saruni said the student lost one of his thumbs during the incident.

“He was coming from school heading to his place in Rongai at around 8pm when the incident happened. Also, the hyena bit one side of his face,” Saruni said.

“You cannot be sleeping on your job while our students are being mauled by hyenas left right and Centre,” the KUSO President said.

In recent past cases of people being mauled by hyenas are on the rise especially in areas of Ongata Rongai and Juja in Kiambu County.

In January KWS advised the public to stop and not run away from the animal. KWS said as a predator, it will instinctively chase animals that run away.

“Keep yourself calm when talking to it. Don’t move away until the hyena does and when you continue to face its direction,” KWS noted.
