Actress Wanjiku Mburu, who played the role of Mama Baha in Machachari has shared details of the conversations she had with her brother who is being held captive by Al Shabaab in Somalia.

Her brother George and her cousin who is also known as George were abducted in January 2014. Since then, Mama Baha has been able to talk to her brother twice. The first time was barely two months after their abduction, while the second came in October 7, 2024.

In their recent interaction, their chat was a lengthy one as the Al Shabaab had a message to deliver to the government of Kenya through their captives.

During their conversation, George revealed that he has been locked in a cell, with hands in cuffs and legs in chains. He was separated from his cousin a long time ago and has never heard from him. Not having anyone to speak to, 10 years later, his speech sounds different according to Mama Baha.

“He said ‘Shi ni Kajijo, kwani umenisahau?’ There is not a moment a day or an hour that I don’t think of him. I could hear the voice, the laugh was his but the speech…I asked why he was talking like that and he said ‘I just found out today which year it is . I have been inside four  walls, with handcuffs and chains on my legs, I always talk to the four walls, how will I talk?’ ” Wanjiku shared through a TikTok video,

“He said, “Shiku nataka unifanyie kitu, niko desparate ukiskia imelia, jua imeuma.’ He is saying let us stand up and talk consistently about him and government to talk to Al Shabaab,” she said adding that George urged her to use social media so that people can be aware of their situation.

George further said that Al Shabab abducted them because the government was sending soldiers to Mogadishu.

“Akaambiwa wewe you are a prisoner of war. George ameniambia I want to come back home, he is in a desperate situation. My brother has diabetes,” she said.

Wanjiku said that they have previously protested and even written letters to the previous government in a bid to rescue her relatives.

She appealed to Kenyans to unite so that Kenyans being held in captive can finally be back home.
