King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer.
The information was made public by the Royal family through their official social media channels
According to the statement from Buckingham palace, the king was diagnosed with ‘a form of cancer’ during a recent hospital procedure that was meant to treat his enlarged prostrate. The type of cancer was however not revealed.
“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostrate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostics have identified a form of cancer,” the statement read in part.
The King was therefore advised public facing duties as he continues with treatment. He will however undertake state business and paper work as usual.
“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible,” the family further stated.
They statement also revealed why the health status was shared to the public
“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” he said.
King Charles ascended to throne in September 2022, following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II. Should he be unable to fulfil his duties, the constitution allows the counsellors of state to step in on his behalf.
The counsellors includes his wife Queen Camilla, his elder son Prince William, as well as his siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward.
His son Prince Harry and brother Prince Andrew are however excluded because they are not active working royals.
Prince William, who is the next on the line to the throne, will also be resuming his duties later this week after taking some time off following an abdominal surgery that his wife Kate Middleton underwent.
