Grammys organisers have set the record straight about receiving Kshs500 million from the Kenyan government to host Grammys in 2027.
The allegations about the payment were made by President William Ruto on December 9, 2024 during a town hall meeting at KICC
“The money for Grammys we already paid. We already paid Sh500 million and I’m sure the gentleman from Grammys can confirm that that is the direction we are going,”Ruto said then.
The president said this after the head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Denis Itumbi, said that he had given them the go-ahead to bid for the hosting of the prestigious Awards that recognises outstanding performances in the music industry.
In a bid to establish the truth of the matter, Social media personality Joe Muchiri reached out to the Recording Academy of the United States, that organises Grammys, via email.
In their response, the recording Academy said that they are an NGO and don’t receive money from foreign governments.
“Thank you for reaching out. The 2025 Grammys will take place on February 2, 2025, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. We are a non-profit organisation. We don’t take money from foreign governments. Best regards, Recording Academy Membership Department,” their email read.
