Implementation of the Education reforms might face a stumbling block as a growing number of lawmakers  raise serious concerns about the rapid changes in the Education sector.

The lawmakers are stating that some aspects of the proposed changes  could potentially violate constitutional provisions.

In a move that has sparked a significant debate in the National Assembly, the legislators are calling for the immediate suspension of the report’s implementation until it receives the National Assembly’s approval.

Member of Parliament, Emuhaya constituency, Omboko Milemba, who is a vocal critic of certain aspects of the recommendations, argued that several key proposals directly infringed on the mandate of the Teacher Service Commission (TSC). He stressed the need to uphold the constitution while reforming the education sector.

“We must ensure that any reforms in the education sector adhere to our constitution. The Teacher Service Commission plays a vital role in managing teachers, and some of these recommendations could potentially undermine its authority,” he stated ,

Milemba formally requested the speaker of the national assembly, Moses Wetangula to issue directions on the matter. The speaker’s guidance he said, would be instrumental in determining the course of action regarding the report’s implementation and its alignment with constitutional provisions.

The report in question is spearheaded by a professor from the University of Nairobi, Raphael Munavu. It has gained significant attention due to its ambitious plans that had already been implemented following the  task force recommendations.

The programs include removing Junior Secondary School from high school to primary school, adopting a new grading system, a new funding model and rationalization of new learning areas.

While there is consensus on the need for improvements, lawmakers are committed to safeguarding the constitutional principles that underpin Kenya’s education system.

As the discussions continue, Kenyans now await to see how the National Assembly will address the concerns raised by lawmakers regarding the Education Reform recommendations.
