Judy Nyawira and Abel Mutua are among the most admirable couple in the Kenyan entertainment industry.
The two have been together for 15 years and they have a teenage daughter.
Nyawira had a candid conversation with Oga Obinna and she opened up on how she met her husband.
According to her, she met Abel while in first year at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication. At the time Abel and his colleague(Philip Karanja) were in their final years. Dennis Mwang’ombe popularly known as OJ was also clearing up school.
The trio were superstars in college and across the country because of the roles they played on Tahidi high drama series.
“I enter college and I find there is a certain buzz. It’s about fellow freshers coming to school and finding that there are three boys who are on TV on a programme known as Tahidi High. OJ was clearing school but Philip na Abel were just entering their final year. That was the first time I was hearing about Tahidi High. At home, we didn’t have TV, we only got one when I was finishing college, I have been brought up in ushago no TV no nothing. So when they used to talk about them, I was like…they are just fellow students, walking out there, so that was me na hio kikosi. The fact that walikuwa supestars kila msichana akiingia hio shule hao ndio maboyz,” she said.
Her first close encounter with Abel came when she lend her jumper to a fellow male students. At the time she was in drama club and Abel was also a participant. They had met a couple time but on a general basis.
“One of the nights after rehearsal, kulikuwa kunanyesha, there is this guy anaitwa Munga nikamwambia chukua hii sweater uende nayo kesho utaniletea,” Judy Nyawira went on.
Two days later, she got a phone call from a strange phone number and the caller was telling her that he has her sweater and he asked where should deliver it.
“Nilikuwa nashangaa huyo ni nani, nauliza ni nani-Abel Mutua, roho kwanza inshtuka kidogo,” she recalled.
She questioned him how he got the sweater since she had given it to another guy. Abel however took the sweater from the guy because he had seen her give it to him.
“Akaniambia ataniletea hio usiku nikamwambia hostel namba yangu akaleta. Tumesimama hapo nje kwa corridor tunaongea anapatia sweater but akienda kuleta ananikiss. Nashangaa. This entire time haikuwa imenihit nini inahappen. Kumbe maneno ya phonecall, sweater na interactions with him mimi kwa kichwa yangu haikuwahi click ati anaezakuwa ni chali anaezanikatia. That totally turned out to be a different case, That night was the beginning of 15 years,” Judy Nyawira said.
