Slain student Rita Waeni has been buried at her parents’ home in Mukimwani village, Kasau location, Makueni County in an event that was only attended by family members.
“We at peace because we know that our larger family, friends, colleagues and many Kenyans who have shared this loss will understand this decision,
“We know that many people have understood the depth of this loss and therefore decision for privacy at this event. We call upon the government to carry out thorough investigations, so that justice for Waeni may prevail,” the family said.
Waeni was to join her fourth year of study at Jomo Kenyatta University Of Agriculture and Technology, before her untimely death
Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed that she was strangled and later decapitated.
“The main findings were that the head had been chopped off from the neck and there was bruising on the scalp caused by a blunt object. We also saw some fractures on bones,” said Oduor.
Waeni was murdered on January 13, 2024, at an apartment in Roysambu where her body was dismembered by the killer. The main killer is yet to be arrested.
Police are pursuing leads into the murder. The owner of the apartment, Risper Muthoni, told the police the killer booked the room on Saturday, January 13 at 3pm. The next day, the caretaker reported finding suspicious polythene bags and a blood-soaked bedsheets on the staircase.
The family later came out to reveal that Waeni had left her aunts place in Syokimau to meet a friend. Officers who visited the scene found the dismembered body without a head, which was later found in a dam in dam in Kiambaa area Kiambu County.
The head was identified by the family on January 25 during an autopsy procedure that was done by the government pathologist. The killer used a hacksaw to dismember Waeni’s body. DCI released Waeni’s body on February 2, 2024 ahead of the funeral plans
