Raila Odinga, party leader of the Orange Democratic Party, has accepted go for the chairmanship of the African Union after gaining support from former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Addressing the press in Karen on Thursday, February 15, the party leader of ODM expressed his desire to serve in the AU position.

“I am inclined to accept the challenge and am ready and I offer myself to be of service. I have asked my friend Olusegun Obasanjo to continue being a good ambassador and talk to other people,” he said.

“I am ready to go for the championship of the African Union. I have been consulting widely, I think am ready to serve the continent of Africa. Africa deserves better, if we marshal our resources as a continent, pull in one direction, then we can be able to make Africa greater,” Raila added.

Former Nigerian president Obasanjo said Raila is best suited for the position as it requires someone who had held a high position in government such as the presidency or prime minister.

The ODM party leader has served in various positions in the country including being the second prime minister of Kenya.

Also, Raila who served in AU as high representative for infrastructure development in Africa remarked that he would ensure the region tapped on its vast natural resources he has been championing on equal human rights, equal distribution of resources.

“Africa’s economies can complement each other. While in AU, I was able to learn about each of every African country and what they have,” he said, noting that he is the most suitable candidate.

The office holder is a key player in matters relating to politics, election, conflict resolution, and development globally.
