Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio La Umoja alliance, demanded quick action on July 13, in response to the unexplained deaths of over ten individuals whose bodies were discovered disposed of in a compost pit in Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Njenga area.

The former prime minister took to his X account to demand that the government look into the horrific conduct and prosecute those responsible.

Raila expressed his deep sadness over the Mukuru event and offered his condolences to the families of the deceased while declaring his position on the topic.

”It’s a sad and dark moment for Kenya, what we have witnessed in Mukuru kwa Njenga, pains me deeply. To the families who have lost loved ones, accept my deepest condolences.” he wrote

He then added that the people of Kenya demand accountability over the issue at hand.

”The people of Kenya demand accountability,” he said.

Raila expressed these feelings just hours after interim Inspector General Douglas Kanja was instructed by Director of Public Prosecution Renson Ingonga to look into the incident where many mutilated female bodies were found at a Mukuru dumpsite as soon as possible.

Kanja was instructed to carry out a comprehensive inquiry and send the finished file for additional action within 21 days.

“Civil Society Organizations and any person with information that may aid the investigative authorities in these cases are urged to cooperate with the government to help bring perpetrators to justice,” read part of the statement by ODPP.

“This office shall also work tirelessly with relevant government agencies to address concerns of witnesses including their safety.”

In addition, the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has denounced the murder of six women, whose mutilated bodies were discovered in Kware, Mukuru kwa Njenga on Friday.

“The discovery of these bodies is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing pattern of violence against women that has been escalating in our country. This incident is unacceptable. Women and girls in Kenya must be assured and guaranteed of their protection and safety,” Kungu said.
