A police officer was attacked by mob in Kisii on February 3 on theft allegations but was later saved from the irate mob by his colleagues who were on patrol.

The officer, of the constable rank, identified as Edgar Opollo, is accused of robbing a Kisii University student of a smartphone.

The DCI on Wednesday February 7 confirmed that the officer who had robbed a smartphone from a Kisii university student was under heavy blows from the mob but was saved by his colleagues.

“On frisking the injured officer, we found the phone. He was arrested and escorted to the station,” the detectives stated.

The officer is also linked to an armed gang that has been terrorising the Kisii residents for several months. The gang robbed a supermarket of Ksh 40,000 on January 2 in Corner Mbaya area in Kisii. The detectives say the incident was captured on a CCTV showing three robbers who had partially covered their faces, two of whom were armed, one with an AK47 riffle and the other with a pistol.

“The riffle bearer had police fatigues on, but it was not apparent that he was a police officer,” DCI stated.

“An identification pared was conducted where the owner of the supermarket that was robbed positively identified the suspect as one of the gang of robbers who accosted him,” DCI added.

Such cases have been on the rise in Kisii County where armed gangs are terrorizing residents even in broad daylight. Residents are urging the security personnel to act quick on such case and the perpetrators brought to book and face the law.

The police are pursuing the other two suspects. Opollo is  under the police custody as he continues to recuperate at a Kisii hospital under heavy guard with police officers pending further interrogation and arraignment for robbery with violence in court once the investigations are done.
