Elders from the Pokot and Marakwet communities now want a massive disarmament carried out along the Kerio Valley belt.
The elders observed that although such an exercise had been carried out before, several weapons remain in the wrong hands.
Led by Daniel Kisang , they stated that despite the heavy police presence, bandits continue to terrorize locals using the illegal weapons.
“We want the government to conduct a thorough mop up of illegal weapons here. Although such an exercise had been carried out before, many weapons are still in the wrong hands,” noted Kisang.
Speaking during a meeting in the area, Kisang said many children have been left orphans with women remaining widows as a result of banditry.
David Shangole on his part decried lack of information concerning the ongoing operation, accusing security officers of misleading the president on the operation.
“We just hear of that the operation is going on. Unfortunately, we dont get information about the operation from the relevant officers. This operation is not being felt. It has not achieved much. However, these officers have been misleading the president on this matter,” stated Shangole.
The elders also called for the urgent release of presidential bursaries, stating that many children in the area, most of whom are orphans, have remained home due to lack of fees.
Pressure further mounts on the government to compensate victims of banditry, adding that the insecurity menace should be addressed once and for all.
