Ogiek

The Ogiek community is now piling pressure on President William Rutto to nominate one of their members to a cabinet position.

Under the leadership of Mary Ossas, the community lamented that over the years, they have been sidelined despite participating in elections.

Speaking in Mariashoni, Molo Sub County, Ossas said since the death of nominated senator Victor Prengei, no other slot has been given to them.

“We ask President William Rutto to pick one of us for the cabinet. The Ogiek community has been sidelined over the years, which is wrong,” she observed.

She observed that they expected that the nomination would have been given back to them, a situation never was.

Concerning the planned lifting of caveat in the Mau complex, Ossas wants the community consulted, saying it was wrong to politicize the matter.

“We ask the government to consult the community concerning the removal of caveat. The caveat was imposed by the courts hence it was wrong to politicize the matter,” added Ossas.

Ogiek, which is a minority group in Nakuru County, further demanded fairness in resource distribution, accusing the county government of neglect.

Reports indicate that the government intends to lift the caveat, which was imposed by the court, Friday this week, a plan that has drawn mixed reactions among the local communities.
