The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has issued a revision of the monthly salaries MPs and other state officers will be pocketing monthly.
This revision has sparked an online reaction from netizens and other government officials, with most saying they’re not in agreement with it.
Nairobi Senator, Edwin Sifuna reacted saying he does not need the Ksh. 14,000-increment in his salary
“The SRC is proposing to add me 14k on my salary. I didn’t ask for it. I don’t need it. It’s still money, in a country where many have no income, but for perspective I pay close to 300k in income tax every month,” Sifuna said.
“MPs’ payrise amid chaos” is a bit of outrage hunting @citizentvkenya .
Let’s be clear what we are talking about here.

The Senator further stated that he will not battle for the increase salary. He considers the state of the country where people are overburdened by taxes.
“I will not fight for 14k extra when the whole country is saying we need to lessen taxpayer burden. I don’t want this 14k. Ikae,” he added.
However, The Nairobi Senator was dared by a follower to table a bill in the Senate to cut their salaries and pull out all allowances.
“Present a bill to cut your salaries and remove allowances, and you’ll earn the trust of Kenyans. This is something you’ll never do. Preaching water and drinking wine. Shame!! Stop receiving the allowances and take pay cuts!” A follower dared.
Furthermore, another citizen commented saying it’s so ironical that the government says it has no money to pay JSS teachers and yet it has money to increase state officials’ salaries.
“Pay rise for President, MPs and state officers yet, we have no money to hire JSS Teachers. We don’t have a country here,” he added.
Another X user made an emotional comment considering the economic crisis experienced in the country. He says it’s ‘unjustifiable’ to increase salaries that leaves taxpayers’ pockets barely empty.
“At a time when our country is facing an economic crisis, increasing the salaries of Prime CSs, CSs, PSs, governors, and the IG is completely unjustifiable. Instead of burdening taxpayers further, resources should be directed toward alleviating the economic hardships faced by ordinary Kenyans. This pay rise is a slap in the face to those struggling to make ends meet.”
Others who have disputed the pay rise include Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Aldai MP Maryanne Kitany(UDA), Kericho senator and senate majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Homa Bay MP Peter Kaluba, His Saboti counterpart Caleb Amisi, Busia Women Rep among others
“MPs and other state officers should not be added even a coin. It’s sad to increase salary while Kenyans have no jobs, Kenyans have no capital to start businesses, Kenyans have no money to pay school fees, No money for medication. Say no to salary increments,” Babu Owino said
