Gospel musician Daddy Owen was among the artists who performed during Jamhuri Day last Thursday, and he also did not escape the wrath of Gen Zs who greeted him after his mobile number was leaked.
Speaking about the encounter, Daddy Owen said that he started receiving calls while at the back stage, at venue of Jamhuri celebrations
“I was invited to go and perform and Jamhuri Day celebrations. Guys know my stand when it comes to how things are in the country and so many were shocked how come I accepted to perform at the Jamhuri Celebrations. I had my own reasons. Some were really disappointed, some just jumped into conclusions and it is okay everyone has their own opinions,” Owen said.
The singer said that he received thousands of calls, messages, WhatsApp messages and others were sending him Kshs1 bob through Mpesa.
“Kenyans can really salimia you. My phone was off the hook. It was ringing every minute. If there was any important call that was coming through, I couldn’t be reached because guys were calling back to back,” he said.
After about an hour, he decided to respond to some of the calls and listen what they wanted to say.
“The first 10-20 calls there was nothing constructive. They were insults,” he said adding that despite the insults he continued picking the calls, hoping that he could meet someone logical and have a discussion with them.
“I had so many phone calls and I had so many meaningful conversations with some people who were willing to understand what exactly was happening. Some were even advising me,” he said. “10-15%c were guys who wanted me to send them money. There are others who had some genuine concerns and I made sure nawatumia kakitu.”
