Mercy Wangui with her 3 children from Githurai were forced to 3 spend nights in the cold after her caretaker locked her house due to rent arrears.
Philanthropist Derrick Mbugua, came to the rescue of the 22-year on Thursday night at around 11pm after receiving a call from a businessman in Kahawa Sukari, where the family had sought refuge.
Wangui informed Mbugua that she had been kicked out of 3 days ago. Apparently, she had been surviving on begging from well wishers to feed her children.
“The lady says her name is Mercy Wangui she is 22 years old with three children one is 10 years old. She got the child at 13 years and the case was reported to the police station, but the families got to an agreement that the man behind the pregnancy should marry her. Years down the line, she now has three kids with no father to take care of them as he left,” Mbugua shared.
The team proceeded Wangui’s house, where they negotiated with the caretaker to open her house, a move that the to the discovery that she was unwanted in the plot, because of mistreating her children and having poor relations with neighbours. According to the caretaker, she had been away from the area for over a month.
“Kindly, let us have reason and allow the mother to access her belongings since she has revealed that she desires to go to her rural home. She can clean her babies, and they wear clean clothes. I will provide the fare for her to go home,” Mbugua negotiated, with the caretaker saying, “Tell her to stop telling lies,”
“We are guests here and don’t know how you relate with each other. I don’t see how all of these people can have hatred towards her. According to your account, she could not pay rent for those months until she became a burden. It has reached a point that you had enough,” Mbugua further said.
Eventually, the caretaker opened her house and they found most of her clothes were soaked as the house was leaking.
Wangui picked up some of her things and some of her children’s clothes and documents, and followed Mbugua and his team who booked a matatu for her to travel to Mukurwe-ini to live with her grandmother.
