Nkululeko Dlamini, popularly known as King of Squats, is currently in Kenya and will be having an event dubbed King Fitness Explosion Challenge.
The event will be held on September 21 t the Waterfront Mall in Karen.
In an interview ahead of the much anticipated event for fitness enthusiasts, King of squats said that he preferred to go by the name and exercise because it was unique. He noted that fitness programmes such as Zumba dance had become too common and no one was doing squats.
The South African trainer went on to reveal that he was inspired to do squats because of football.
“I was playing football professionally. I didn’t retire at the time, I just went to do fitness because I was in love with soccer but there were a lot of politics there but because I had the vision I told myself let me do fitness so that while am playing am training also the players. I understand myself and if I understand me, I understand footballers,” King of Squats told Radio Maisha.
He however ended up staying in the gym for too long, forgetting about his football training. So far, he has been doing squats for more than 10 years.
“When I started, I was thinking of what can help people health-wise and fitness-wise. I believe that when you train, you must get results,” he said.
During his early football days, their coach would punish them with exercises such as frog-jumps around the field in case they would make mistakes in the field. This also contributed him to loving squats because it was the most effective exercise compared to any other.
“We were jumping wrongly because we were using toes, but we didn’t understand because we were getting punished so that you don’t do wrong in the field next time. But that thing made me strong, and when I started this I remembered the exercises that I was doing at a young age and chose the one that was effective. I then changed the exercise. To be safe you need to walk when your foot is flat so that it goes into your thighs, butt and core and all over the body,” King of squats said.
He however admitted that his butt features are as a result of squatting, but he was badly off.
“I was not badly off, I had the body part but it was not like this, my purpose was changing the body,” he explained.
