TikTok

A petition brought to parliament to ban Tik Tok by businessman Bob Ndolo has been rejected by most MPs in the house sitting.

The bill read by the speaker of the house Moses Wetangula  deliberated  that the app was shrouded with inappropriate content and it could be sharing information of TikTok users to third parties.

“The petitioner has decried that the content that is being shared on the social media platform is inappropriate and is promoting violence, vulgar language, explicit sexual content, hate speech which is a serious threat to the cultural and religious values in Kenya,” part of the statement by the petitioner

“The platform has shared information about its users with the third-party company without users’ consent,” the petitioner further claimed.

Both the majority leader kimani Ichungwah and minority leader Opiyo Wandayi have however opined that they saw nothing wrong with  the app.

“There is nothing criminal about TikTok. I am also on Snapchat. However, there could be an element of abuse,” Ichung’wah said.

“In this information age, we cannot afford to live in isolation. It will be foolhardy to contemplate banning TikTok or any other apps.”  Wandayi added on the other hand.

It also arose that banning tik tok would be denying youth a worthwhile venue of earning income.

“Young people are at the centre of many challenges, including rising unemployment. TikTok is a platform where young people earn up to KSh 300,000 monthly. That is money they would not make on the regular market.” said Kirinyaga Women Representative Njeri Maina.

It was however  noted that the app contained content that was obscene and therefore needed to be regulated.

“We must regulate on what should be posted on TikTok , the communications authority should go beyond not only TikTok but also other social media platforms” said kimilili MP Didmus Barasa.

The app which has over a billion users globally has also been facing bans in other countries which has affected it’s market capitalisation.
