The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has supported the proposal to allow sick candidates to skip KCSE and KCPE until their recovery.

This proposal was presented by chairman of the National Assembly’s Education Committee Julius Melly.

Melly said that it would be better if students under the mentioned conditions  take a supplementary thereafter. He added that it would be unfair for some students who are sick and others just who have just given birth to sit for the national exams.

“Some students may be sick and some girls may have given birth .We need to come up with a better policy. You can’t give exams to a sick person in hospital. You cant give exams to someone who has just given birth. We’re talking to them about our remedies for this and looking at a recourse to do additional testing in the future, ” he voiced

“It is wrong to give an examination to a sick person: someone who had an operation and is on medication . it is unfair, unkind, inhumane , but in terms of the timetable, I don’t think it’s going to happen this year , but we’ve given them a directive on that,” he further said.

In the same spirit, KUPPET’s Kilifi branch association chairman Opollo K’opollo supported the proposal by saying that completion of exams by KCSE candidates in wards is difficult.

Melly requested KNEC to ensure that exams arrive on the expected stations on time despite the El-Nino rains hat is expected in the country.

KCSE exams are set to kick off on October 23 and end on 24th November.

Last year, four KAPSEA (Kenya Primary School Education Assessment)and KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) candidates gave birth during 2022 November national exams.
