Kenya Power and Lighting Company(KPLC) is currently running a campaign for their customers to update their prepaid meter tokens.

The exercise is done through reset and update codes that are send to customers while purchasing tokens. The exercise will be ending on August 31, 2024 and those who will have not updated their tokens by then will be unable to use electricity.

“Meters will not accept tokens generated. Important to Note: Before you begin the process of updating your token meter, make sure to load any previously purchased tokens otherwise the tokens will not be loaded after the meter update,” KPLC said on their website

“Update Token Meter Yako is necessary to prevent service disruptions. It is a process that updates software in a prepaid meter to reset the software. If the update is successful, your meter will accept new electricity tokens going forward,” the company added.

There have however been concerns from Kenyans that token units are depleting faster after the update. Addressing the concerns, KPLC, in a statement said that updating meters doesn’t affect electricity consumption.

“Updating your token meter dos not affect your electricity consumption in any way. It is a global exercise to keep your meter working smoothly,” the power company stated.
