Muguka

Gideon Mung’aro becomes the second governor after the governor of Mombasa Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir to ban use and sale of muguka in their county.

In a statement released on 24 May, Gideon in line with law, issued directives banning the entry, transportation, distribution, sale, and use of muguka within Kilifi County.

“In exercise of the powers confirred in Section 30(2)(1) of thhe County Government Act and all other enabling laws of Kenya, I Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, Governor of Kilifi County, herby order and direct as follows:”

The county boss highlighted a number of directives that prohibits entry of Muguka in his county.

Mung’aro then ordered law enforcement officers to immediately put the order in practice. He also warned that any officer found collaborating with law breakers will face the law.

“In light of the above order, I therefore, with immediate effect, issue a directive to all the Kilifi County enforcement officers through the Directorate of enforcement to ensure the order is enforced in totality. Any officer found colluding with culprits will face the law and all the disciplinary actions there are.”

Mombasa Governor Nassir on Thursday issued an executive order banning the sale, supply and consumption of Miraa across the county.

He highlighted the extensive consumption of Muguka at the Coast, among the users being the school-going children.

These bans have faced mixed reaction online, with some people supporting the actions while others negating them.

“From my Economist point of view, banning a widely consumed product like miraa in Mombasa and Kilifi will will not alter demand but instead, it will push the trade underground, leading to the rise of illicit markets & loss of government taxes.” Collins on X.

“This should have been done last year. Muguka is destructive drug more than bhang.” Kitove on X.

“No one speaks for our people but oh well ban it everywhere if you must. At the end of the day, no one cares for Miraa farmers and Meru as a block lacks Leadership,” Brian Mwenda.

However, Brian also assured the people of Meru that they will not allow the ban of Muguka to succeed. He added that they will seek humanly possible assistance to block the implementation.

“The people of Meru will not and shall not accept the ban of Mogoka/Miraa Ban. We will do everything humanly possible to ensure that frivolous executive order cannot be enforced,” asserted Mwenda.
