The rising cost of fuel in the country has elicited different reactions as Kenyans demand answers as to why fuel prices in neighbouring countries were going down.

President William Ruto today held a parliamentary group meeting which saw the ruling government  tackle the issue on the rise of fuel.

Ruto who convened the meeting as the party leader of the United Democratic Alliance and the Kenya Kwanza Coalition was joined by over 200 Members of Parliament (MP) at the state house Nairobi.

The meeting saw the leaders table different issues but one that took center stage was the ever-rising cost of living specifically the rising cost of fuel which is making the Kenya Kwanza regime lose its popularity with the masses.

Meanwhile, Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir appeared before the National Assembly Energy Committee where he was grilled by the legislators over the failure of Kenya to reduce the cost of fuel while other Neighboring nations were succeding in it.

“ Tanzania as we speak prices are going down while in Kenya the Prices are going up” an MP noted.

In his defense, the CS asked for more time to discuss and take members through what was negotiated.

He stated that taxes were the main reason as to why products in Uganda or Tanzania were cheaper and not because of freight and premium charges as earlier speculated.

“The Product in Tanzania or Uganda will not be cheaper than Kenya on account of freight and premium it will be because of taxes. We will always be lower on freight and premium and that’s why I said we need a wider scope of time to discuss and take members through what was negotiated.” Chirchir explained

The Ministry of Energy officials further noted that the differences in fuel prices in Kenya and neighboring nations were a result of the dollar exchange rates which have seen their currency gain against the Kenya shilling.

Kenya Kwanza MP’s are set to have another Parliamentary meeting next week to discuss the cost of fuel.
