Elisha Ongoya

Kenya Films and Classifications Board CEO Ezekiel Mutua has revealed that Lawyer Elisha Ongoya, who put a strong defence for DP Rigathi Gachagua in the ongoing impeachment process, once defended him.

In a lengthy social media post, Mutua said that he won all the cases that Ongoya represented him.

“Elisha Zebedee Ongoya was once my lawyer and he won all the cases in which he represented me. We haven’t met for over ten years, but I blessed him when he saved my young career during the Kibaki administration,” he said.

Mutua said he encountered hurdles when he was serving as the Secretary General for the Kenya Union of Journalists. His hardwork and determination to defend the media and journalists saw government officials and media honchos bay for his blood.

Then suddenly all hell broke loose. Our fierce stance on media freedom didn’t go well with the Government and we also lost the goodwill of Media Owners because of defending journalists and demanding better pay for them. A plot was hatched to bring us down. At some point in 2005 I had so many cases against me including one from a shylock whom I had borrowed 10k but kept compounding the interest on the principle amount until it became Ksh120,000. My situation was so bad that even my friends in the legal fraternity deserted me. At some point I had three matters coming up in court and I had no lawyer to represent me,” he narrated.

“Then miraculously I bumped into Elisha Zebedee Ongoya during a radio show on Family FM and he offered to represent me pro bono. He won all the three cases in a row and ended up becoming my lawyer for many years. Elisha Zebedee Ongoya simply salvaged my career and gave me a new lease of life by getting me cleared of all charges, paving way for me to become the Director of Information and Public Communications in 2007. The rest, as they say, is history!” he concluded.
