grenade

Three months after losing his fore arms while trying to control Anti-Finance Bill 2024 protestors with a stun grenade, Chief Inspector of the Rapid Deployment Unit David Maina has opened up.

Recounting the moment, during an interview with a local TV station, Maina said that there was some reluctance when he tried to pull the grenade’s pin, only for him t to see darkness.

“I removed the pin but there was some resistance. When it finally got off and then I was just about to throw my stun grenade, I just saw darkness. I really don’t understand what happened coz this is something that I have used, I have gone through during training to me am just referring to it as an accident,” he told TV  47.

Maina says that the news of him getting injured in the line of duty shocked everyone including his family, friends and colleagues.

“They came to the hospital, there was a time they were only allowed to see me one minute each because they were a lot of them. I was explaining to them and I had gone through some counselling so I was accepting the new normal,” the police officer said

The quick professional medical attention saved him as he had lost a lot of blood. Maina extended gratitude o his wife who is his caregiver for standing with him from the first day he suffered the accident. He is still receiving treatment and in the recovery process

After he fully recovers, doctors will install some gadgets on his arms that will aid his operations

Although Maina is unable to do some of the things he used to do before, he is confident that with time he will learn and become more independent.

He also clarified that he did not intended to harm anyone with the stun grenade.

“The stun grenade was not meant to kill or hurt anyone it was meant to produce just a  loud sound for the crowd to disperse. Ignore some of these criticism because some of them are from people who are  ignorant on what really happened. The criticism I have just to ignore them, I have gone through them on social media,” he said.
