Nandi County has recorded success in the fight against malnutrition, as the Kenya Demographic Health Survey lists the county among the counties with the highest levels of malnutrition in the country.
Deputy Governor Yulitah Mitei expressed joy over the same, noting that stunted growth in the county has declined to 15% up from 29%,
Mitei expressed hope the statistics will decline further, noting that most residents have been grappling with hidden hunger.
“The county has recorded drastic decline in cases of stunted growth. This is as a result of the efforts put by the county,” she said.
Dr Mitei lauded the introduction of the Facility Improvement Fund by the county, saying move has eased the procurement of medicines at public facilities in the county.
“The introduction of the Facility Improvement system is the game changer in as far as availability of drugs is concerned. This system is efficient and very soon, the shortage of drugs will be a thing of the past,” added Mitei.
DG Cheruiyot is engaging women in nutrition education and kitchen gardening through her ‘Korgei Arise’ initiative.
Christian Aid Country Director Janet Ngombalu on her part reaffirmed the organizations readiness to partner with the county, adding that the community has a role to play as far as budgeting, expenditure, accountability and service delivery is concerned.
“We will continue working with the county government to boost nutrition. The community has a role to play as far as budgeting, expenditure, accountability and service delivery by the government are concerned,” stated Ngombalu.
The county is implementing the County Nutrition Action Plan focusing on 10 key result areas, focused around three themes: nutrition-specific interventions, nutrition-sensitive interventions and enabling environment.
