Persistent insecurity has remained a major challenge in Angata Barrikkoi area on the Narok – Migori border over the years.
Local residents lamented that the vice has led to loss of lives, suspicion and hampered development in the area.
Led by Johanna Kamillan, they said despite the numerous security installations in the area, the problem seems not to end anytime soon.
“We have many security installations here. We have GSU, Anti-stock theft Unit, AP and other camps here. Sad enough, criminals are able to penetrate and carry out attacks,” he noted.
Speaking at a meeting in the area, Kamillan noted that tens of families have fled their homes with some schools remaining deserted, which he says is worrying.
“Many families have fled there homes as a result of insecurity. Some schools are also deserted. When you visit this area, you wonder which country we are. The government has totally failed to perform its roles,” added Kamilan.
The residents now want a thorough disarmament exercise conducted in the area, claiming several firearms, some of which belong to the police are in the hands of criminals.
Land ownership disputes have been blamed for communal conflicts in the area, with pressure further mounting on the government to urgently address the problem.
At least 80 illegal firearms and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition were collected in a mop-up exercise carried out in the area in 2021.
