On May 7, three weeks after her husband’s death, Aileen Ogolla stepped down as chairperson of the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK).
Aileen handed over the leadership of MWAK to Grace Kahariri, the spouse of the current Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Charles Muriu Kahariri, during a ceremony that was held in Nairobi.
Aileen’s late husband and immediate former Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla, died in a helicopter crash on April 19.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, MWAK leadership strongly borrows from the KDF organization and therefore MWAK’s leadership had to be changed after president Ruto named Kahariri the new CDF.
Ruto, who is the Commander in Chief of the Kenyan Armed Forces, appointed Kahariri alongside John Omenda as his vice.
It should be mentioned that prior to taking top leadership of MWAK, Grace Kahariri served as the organization’s vice chair because her husband was the VCDF at the time.
The late generals wife, thanked the MWAK team for their assistance throughout her brief tenure as chairperson.
“She encouraged the members to channel the same spirit to the incoming chair who is just as capable and passionate about making a positive difference for women and the families of the KDF personnel,” according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.
Aileen also promise to avail herself whenever she is required despite the fact that she is living the millitary barracks.
“I look forward to seeing this organisation grow and achieve even more,” she said, grateful for the opportunity to serve.
