16 children aged between 2 and 16 have been rescued from a house in Soweto Kayole area by police on Monday 19 February.

The rescue operation was initiated after a report was filed by a children protection officer from Embakasi Central Constituency at the Soweto Police Station.

“Officers from Soweto led by orderly officer Kayole, Duty officer Soweto and team proceeded to the scene and gained access to the said house and found 16 children in two roomed rental houses,” read a police report read.

The report made by Daniel Odongo, a children protection officer in Embakasi Central constituency informed the police of the presence of the children in a plot within Nyando area.

It is due to this report that police made a move, arresting a Kenyan identified as Linet Akinyi and a Tanzanian national, Isaack Mwanjeka 54.

The duo upon questioning could not provide information on what criteria was used for the children to be there and under their care.

It is however believed the children had arrived from different parts of the country and Tanzania and were headed to an unknown destination.

They were being held in a two-roomed house for the past weeks police were alerted.

Confirming the incident, Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said they are interrogating the two suspects to get to the bottom of the matter.

“Some of the children are as young as two years. It is a hard task to even take care of such young ones,” Says Bungei

Bungei has however asked members of the public help to contain the crime as police continue with investigations into the matter.

The children have safely been relocated to a private children’s home in the area as the two suspects remain in custody.
