Mukumu Girls high school students have been booked back into hospital wards barely seven days after the institution opened it’s doors for the second term.

The school principal Jane Mbone had earlier reported that only three students had complained of feeling unwell and at the institution put appropriate measures to curb the situation and prevent any further casualties.

However, according to Kakamega County Health executive officer Bernard Wesonga, about of 82 learners have been received and treated by health facilities around the school between 8th -14th May.

Of the 82 students received by the hospitals, 38 have been treated and discharged to receive outpatient care from the school.

22 students have been admitted at St Elizabeth Mukumu for more medical attention while 2 more students admitted at Kakamega Referral Hospital with 1 at Hema Hospital in Kisii County.

The county health department also reported that none of the students admitted are facing a life threatening situation. Most of them are expected to be back to school soon.

“Further laboratory culture tests are being carried out to rule out other possible pathogens. Most of the girls are in a stable condition and none of them have shown signs of severe illness such as severe dehydration, haemochezia, haematuria, jaundice, severe anaemia or persistent fever” read part of the statement released by Wesonga.

Mukumu Girls had been initially closed down after three students and one teacher succumbed bacterial infection disease caused by contaminated water and food consumed at the school.

The school was later Reopened after five weeks when the Ministry of education and stakeholders at the Ministry Health evaluated the institution and declared it fit to operate.
