11 people have been killed following a road accident that involved a Super metro bus and a lorry at around 2am on Monday.

The head on collision occurred  between Ahero and Awasi in the Othoo area, along Nairobi-Kisumu highway.

The dead include two women, 8 men and a teenage boy. According to Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Mwangi , a total of 53 passengers suffered injuries as a result of the accident.

Additionally, it is reported that two drivers and a conductor who are affiliated with the bus Sacco are feared dead.

Reports about the incident, indicate that the bus, that was headed to Nairobi from Kampala, rammed into the lorry ferrying goods along the Ahero-Awasi road while it was overtaking. The sub-County Commander based in Nyando Grace Thuo has also confirmed the incident.

“A road traffic incident involving a PSV matatu and a lorry has been reported at Ahero Junction, Kisumu County. Response teams are en route to the scene,” Kenya Red Cross said.

E-Plus Ambulance Kenya in a statement said they were working in conjunction with Kenya Red Cross to assist the injured victims.

The Ambulance service provider added that a multi-agency response team has been ferrying injured victims to Ahero Sub-County Hospital while also assisting in transferring critical cases to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).

“Our Ambulance crew, part of the multi-agency response team, has been actively responding, ensuring at least three injured individuals were taken to Ahero Sub-County Hospital.

Kenya Red Cross is setting up a psychological support and tracing desk,” E-Plus Ambulances Kenya said.

Additionally, while confirming the case, Super Metro Sacco offered their condolences to the family members of the casualties.

“As Super Metro family would like to inform the public that it’s so unfortunate that one of our buses plying the Kampala-Nairobi route was involved in an accident before Awasi along the Kisumu-Nairobi highway,”

“We would wish to convey a message of condolence to the families that lost their beloved ones and quick recovery to those who are in the hospital,” super metro added.
